Città della Scienza (City of Science) is a complex located in Bagnoli, in the western part of Naples—an area that once played a strategic industrial role and is now undergoing extensive redevelopment.
The project has been implemented in phases since the late 1990s and is still ongoing. It involved the restoration of over 30,000 square metres of industrial warehouses dating back to the late 19th century. A careful remodeling of the existing volumes allowed for the integration of various functions within the old glassworks, making Città della Scienza the leading science-focused cultural centre in Italy.
The seafront complex houses the Museo Vivo della Scienza (Living Science Museum), while the northern block is home to the Business Innovation Centre and the Advanced Training Centre.
These completed facilities were joined by Corporea (Museum of the Human Body), which—unlike the previous components—was a newly constructed building.
Interprogetti developed the design for the structural interventions required to optimize the use of space in accordance with the architectural vision. The restoration of tuff masonry, consolidation of wooden trusses, foundation reinforcement, and seismic upgrades for the buildings that required significant modification were among the executive-level interventions designed and supervised on-site during construction.
